Peruvian Woman Bed Bound Because of Massive Breasts

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

Just when you thought you’ve heard it all, down comes another story that’s beyond belief…a 29-year old mother of three in Peru was bed ridden for over 6 months because her breasts had grown so large she would literally faint because of the massive stress of carrying N-cup breasts.

After giving birth to her third child, the small framed woman began experiencing massive breast growth. “It was awful. If I tried to get up I would faint because my breasts were so heavy. My breasts became so huge my skin had sores and I had trouble breathing.”

The woman was finally able to receive help when local media paid for her to take a three-day trip to the nearest town for medical help. Once there, doctors diagnosed her with an extreme form of Bilateral Gynecomastia – or a condition where the mammary gland continues to grow. They were also concerned about the impact of this weight on her lungs.

Doctors performed a 6-hour breast reduction operation where they removed 35 pounds of flesh from her chest – resulting in a 34B cup size for the beleaguered mother of three.

“Before the operation I couldn’t do anything, I just had to live with it, it got so bad that my breast were touching my legs” says the woman.

While this is a very extreme case, oversize breasts can present problems for many women. Breast reduction surgery at our Florida plastic surgery clinic can help address this problem, giving women a new sense of confidence and relief from carrying around such a heavy load on their chests.

“Gummy Bear” Breast Implants Offer Alternative to Saline and Silicone

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

While breast implants have been available for years now, researchers in academia and industry are always on the lookout for better materials to make implants safer and more comfortable. Cohesive silicone gel implants are one of the newest types of breast implants to hit the market.

Due to the similarities with the texture of gummy bear candy, these implants are informally known as “gummy bear” breast implants. While their use hasn’t been approved in the U.S. yet, they are taking Europe and Brazil by storm…and there’s good reason why.

First, they use a new type of silicone that addresses two of the problems with traditional saline and silicone implants – rupturing and rippling. If there’s a tear in one the new gummy bear implants, the substance inside will maintain its shape and integrity, alleviating the concern of silicone migrating to other parts of the body where it can cause problems.

Cohesive silicone gel implants also have a more natural feel than traditional saline implants. Other advantages of gummy bear implants include:

  • Lower risk of rupture and leaking
  • More natural look and comfortable fit
  • Ability to maintain their form, or “bounce back”
  • Less risk of capsular contracture, or inflammation and hardening of scar tissue

While it may seem gummy bear implants are infallible, they do have some disadvantages over more traditional options. One, they feel firmer than other implant options, which may be uncomfortable for some women. Also, a larger incision is required to insert them and they do cost more. And if the implant does move, it may cause a distorted appearance.

Unfortunately, this procedure is not available on a wide scale in the U.S. To obtain gummy bear implants in this country, women have to enroll in a clinical study that’s evaluating these implants (or travel to Europe or Brazil)

Even though there are some drawbacks, reports from patients indicate overwhelming satisfaction. In fact, they have become one the most popular breast augmentation options in Europe and Brazil.

In the mean time, consider breast augmentation and lift options at our Florida plastic surgery center in Gainesville. If you’re interested in learning more, contact Accent Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics today.

Chemotherapy Drug Fluorouracil may Improve Aging Skin’s Appearance

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

Associate professor of dermatology at the University of Michigan Dr. Dana L. Sachs, M.D. released a study that shows the chemotherapy drug fluorouracil may help reduce precancerous skin patches and improve the appearance of sun-damaged skin.

Fluorouracil is a drug used to treat cancers of the colon, head and neck, pancreas and other organs which stops the body from synthesizing thymine, a building block of DNA.

Clinicians began noticing a change in skin appearance for cancer patients who were using the drug in an unrelated study.  This led these them to develop a topical therapy to treat skin lesions that may develop into skin cancer.

Dr. Sachs and his colleagues evaluated molecular and clinical changes in the skin of 21 healthy volunteers who had skin lesions and sun-damaged skin. They applied a 5 percent fluorouracil cream to their face twice a day for two weeks. Evaluations were done at the beginning of the study and photographs were taken as it progressed. Patients were also evaluated at the end by three dermatologists not involved with the study.

The number of lesions was reduced significantly from an average of 11.6 to 1.5. Clinical evaluations found other improvements to age-related skin issues, including decreases in wrinkling, dark skin spots, hyperpigmentation (skin getting darker) and sallowness (yellow skin tone).

Skin biopsies taken soon after patients discontinued applying the topical skin cream showed increases in levels of compounds related to skin injury, inflammation and degradation of the extracellular matrix. The study’s authors also write that topical fluorouracil causes epidermal injury which improves appearance by stimulating wound healing and dermal remodeling.

Treatment was generally well tolerated with 95% of patients seeing an improvement in their while 89% said they would do it again. Patients who use this topical ointment for skin lesions will also likely see restorative effects from sun damage, providing further motivation to undergo the rigorous treatment.

However, there are some who may find this treatment cosmetically unacceptable since the standard course of therapy may last two to three weeks and the ensuing reaction may last for several more.  But there will undoubtedly be others who will choose to undergo this cosmetic treatment due to its lower cost.

Give your Arms a Toned, Youthful Look with a Brachioplasty

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

Arm lift surgery at our north Florida plastic surgery center helps women regain their confidence by losing excess skin and fat in the upper arm. Arm lifts also reshape the under portion of the upper arm to give you better contours in that part of the body.

Because of aging, weight loss or even heredity, skin can lose its elasticity and localized fat deposits can develop. While exercise can address muscle tone and strength, it isn’t quite enough to handle this loose skin.

A brachioplasty is safe to go forward with if you’re in reasonably good health, have a stable weight and do not smoke.

Arm lift surgeons at Accent Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics are available to sit down with you and explain the procedure, the recovery and any risks that are involved.

If you decide to undergo arm lift surgery, you will need to do several things like adjust medication you’re currently taking and avoid Aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs and herbal supplements since they increase the risk of bleeding. Stop smoking well before your scheduled procedure.

Similar Facial Aging Found Between Mothers and Daughters

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

Another similarity between mothers and daughters uncovered by new research – mothers and daughters experience similar patterns in facial aging.

Researchers at Loma Linda University in California examined 40 mother-daughter pairs and examined their facial features using computer modeling and 3D cameras. The team found that mothers and daughters who look the same will age the same way as well. For example, if a mother has experienced volume loss in the lower eyelid throughout her life, her daughter can expect that to happen as well.

But thanks to innovative and minimally invasive cosmetic surgery and aesthetic options, young women do not have to surrender their face to destiny. Understanding your mother’s face and the progression of her aging can be a big help to plastic surgeons addressing sagging skin or volume loss the study concludes.

Lead researcher Dr. Subhas Gupta points out that through this type of research, plastic surgeons will be able to pinpoint exactly where they should inject facial fillers.

These new findings will be especially helpful to women in their mid-30s to early-50s, the best window for taking advantage of minimally invasive techniques to maintain their youthful look.

Other ways women themselves can slow the aging process is to eat healthy, limit sun exposure and don’t smoke says Gupta.

First near Full Face Transplant in the U.S. Deemed a Success

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

Massive injuries to the face usually require several face lift surgery procedures to try and restore a sense of normalcy for patients.

But results from a five-year study by plastic surgery researchers at the Cleveland Clinic published in the January issue of the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery journal suggests facial transplants may be a workable alternative for those with extreme facial injuries.

A multidisciplinary team of plastic surgeons, psychiatrists, immunologists and bioethicists spent 5 years preparing for the procedure, starting the process in 2003. The team garnered the world’s first institutional board approval to perform a face transplant in humans in 2004. After years of arduous approval, research and preparation, surgeons successfully performed the first near-total face transplantation in the United States in December, 2008.

Using a composite allograft from a brain-dead donor, plastic surgeons successfully replaced 80% of the patient’s traumatic facial defect. The patient was a 45-year old woman who sustained a close-range blast from a shotgun and after several face lift surgery procedures, she still had major disabilities.

The donor’s facial allograft represented the largest, most complex facial allograft in the world and included the following: 535 cm2 of facial skin, functional units of a full nose including naval lining and bony skeleton, upper lip, lower eyelids along with underlying muscles and bones.

“We are pleased to report an excellent functional, psychological, and social outcome for our patient at 8 months following transplantation,” says Dr. Maria Z. Siemionow of the Cleveland Clinic.

Extensive physical therapy, rehabilitation and re-education for the patient took place after the pioneering face lift surgery procedure. After 8 months of recovery, the patient has regained most facial functions, including her sense of smell, speech and ability to eat solid foods and drink from a cup. Motion is recovering slowly but surely and the patient is increasingly confident about going out in public.

While the study was a success, researchers caution about the risks of facial transplants and express concern about moving too fast, especially after two similar procedures in France and China resulted in the patients’ death.

Get a Smoother and Firmer Abdominal Area with an Abdominoplasty

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

An abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck surgery, is a plastic surgery procedure that restores weakened or separated abdominal muscles in most instances by removing excess fat and skin.

Good dieting and exercise is great, but sometimes doesn’t give us the flat, firm stomach we’re striving for. Even those with normal body weight can have an abdomen area that’s protruding, loose or sagging.

Besides, the need for a tummy tuck isn’t necessarily linked to factors that can be resolved through diet and exercise – pregnancy, aging, significant weight fluctuations, heredity and prior surgeries are just a few. Results from an abdominoplasty are permanent provided your weight doesn’t fluctuate too much.

An abdominoplasty is a good option if you’re physically healthy, have a stable weight, do not smoke, have realistic expectations and are bothered by having a tummy that’s too large. But if you’re planning to get pregnant or lose a lot of weight, Florida plastic surgeons suggest you postpone the procedure.

But above all…

Tummy tuck surgery is an extremely personal decision and should be done for you, not to satisfy someone else’s desires or achieve some perfect image.

We invite you to take a look at our newest article in the Florida plastic surgery knowledge center and learn more about tummy tuck surgery, how to prepare for it and pictures of some of our prior patients who’ve graciously allowed us to use pictures from their procedures to help educate future patients.

Research Indicates Botox Provides Chronic Pain Relief

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

Botox injections – that famous facial wrinkle treatment – has shown to be an effective solution for those suffering from chronic pain according to recent research presented at the just concluded American Society of Plastic Surgeons conference in Seattle.

Although not approved by the FDA for that purpose, Botox has shown to provide relief for chronic back pain and other common ailments. Logically, it makes sense since the drug’s main purpose prevents facial muscles from contracting, which is what causes facial wrinkles.

Ordinarily, people treat chronic pain with medication, heat therapy, exercise or massage. In the recent experiments, 8 patients received Botox injections each month for 9 months.

All 8 of them reported significant pain reduction lasting up to 17 months.

New Injectable Facial Wrinkle Filler Technique Improves Patient Comfort and Recovery

Friday, October 30th, 2009

We’re always on the lookout for new plastic surgery techniques we think would be a good fit for our Florida plastic surgery center in Gainesville…we want to find innovative ways to give you that new look you’re looking for with as little pain as possible.

So we were delighted to learn about a new injection technique to remove facial wrinkles pioneered by plastic surgeons at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas that’s outlined in this month’s issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

Basically, the new technique involves mixing lidocaine with facial wrinkle filler injections which immediately minimizes pain. Surgeons can immediately begin administering facial wrinkle fillers without having to wait for the effects of traditional anesthesia to kick in. Not only does this facial wrinkle filler procedure save time on the front end, it also makes recovery quicker and less painful.

The injection technique provides an immediate numbing effect by mixing 2% lidocaine with hyaluronic fillers like Restylane and Radiesse.

Dr. Rod Rohrich, chairman of plastic surgery at UT Southwest has been using this combination for around two years now and explains how it’s more and more becoming the norm. Popular hyaluronic fillers like Prevelle and Hydrelle are beginning to include the lidocaine mixture as part of their FDA approval.

Cosmetic surgery procedures like this have remained strong despite the ongoing recession. Botox injections are up 8% and hyaluronic fillers are up 6% this year according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).
