Brazilian Surgeon Says He Operated on Gaddafi

Monday, May 2nd, 2011

Well this is certainly not how you expect to hear about plastic surgery in the news. A surgeon from Brazil is claiming that in 1995 he secretly performed a late night cosmetic procedure on Libyan leader Moammar Gaddafi.

Whether you buy the story not, it certainly makes quite a tale. Brazilian surgeon Dr. Liacyr Ribeiro tells of being spirited into a bunker in the dead of night, where Gaddafi explained that he needed his people to see him as a young and strong, and requested cosmetic surgery. The leader agreed to hair plugs and, after refusing a facelift, also agreed to a Facial Fat Transfer. For this procedure, Dr. Ribeiro removed fat from the stomach and injected it into the face to plump up the skin and hide the appearance of wrinkles.

What’s fascinating here is the whole cloak and dagger feel of his story. The events happened late at night, and one can assume that part of the reason for Gaddafi’s refusal of the facelift was that he did not want to have to explain scars or stay in hiding while he healed. It was clearly important to the leader that his people see him as strong, but he also seemed quite determined to give the impression that his vitality was 100 percent natural and not the result of plastic surgery.

Of course, even with all the secrecy it doesn’t sound like the working conditions were unmanageable. The word bunker may call up images of tiny, dark underground spaces, but according to Dr. Ribeiro this facility had, “two fully equipped and very modern operating rooms.” He also reports told the interviewer that although Gaddafi wanted the procedures take place immediately, he did wait and allow his doctor to assemble a proper cosmetic surgery team.

Dr. Ribeiro really has no reason to make this up. As he explained to the interviewer, with the way Gaddafi looks now there’s not much for a plastic surgeon take pride in. The treatments administered during a late-night bunker visit have clearly worn off. The interview does say that the Libyan leader contacted Dr. Ribeiro around five years ago, but the doctor was unable to make the trip to Libya at the time.

Judging by Gaddafi’s current appearance, it seems he may not have been able to find another doctor to perform his cosmetic surgery after making that call. In recent photos his face shows all the signs of aging less than gracefully. The wrinkles around his eyes and on his forehead are very pronounced, and the sagging skin around his cheeks and jaw line can best be described the way Dr. Ribeiro did in the interview: jowly.

We see patients with Gaddafi’s same motivation in the plastic surgery field all the time. People turning to cosmetic treatments to help their careers certainly isn’t anything new. That said, the career in question is usually not, “leader of a foreign country.”

Surgeons Use Injectable Fillers after Nose Surgery

Wednesday, November 17th, 2010

Florida plastic surgeons at Accent in Gainesville employ a rhinoplasty procedure to help patients reshape and resize their noses. Rhinoplasty surgery in fact is among the top five cosmetic surgery procedures with over 152,000 “nose job” procedures being performed in 2008 alone.

While plastic surgery procedures have improved dramatically, there are still some imperfections.

To smooth out any minor irregularities and asymmetries remaining after any initial rhinoplasty procedure, surgeons have increasingly been turning to injectable fillers. The rise of injectable fillers to smooth wrinkles and other skin enhancements has naturally lead surgeons to consider their use to correct any imperfections following surgery according to an article in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal.

“Injectable fillers allow surgeons to correct post-surgical imperfections without the expense, anesthetic risk, or recovery downtime involved with additional surgery,” comments Dr. Steve Dayan, MD, one of three authors of the article and assistant clinical professor at the University of Illinois Medical Center in Chicago.

Injectable filler substances like Hyaluronic Acid (HA), calcium hydroxylapatite gel (CaHA) and off-label liquid silicone have all been used to varying degrees of success to treat post-surgical nasal deformities.

Authors of the paper though don’t suggest silicone since it carriers a higher risk of complication.

Surgeons also have to be careful on how they use these injectable fillers in the nose region. Placing filler at the nose’s tip, base and too deep can cause complications like bumpy appearance, soft tissue damage or even compromise blood vessels in the nose.

“The use of any soft tissue filler in the nose should always be approached with caution and with thorough consideration of a patient’s inpidual circumstances,” says Dr. Dayan.

And while these fillers offer an easy, less expensive way to revise your nose’s shape and appearance following a rhinoplasty, they’re not recommended as a primary option for altering your nose.

Innovative techniques like this though can make any post-surgical corrections quick and easy and not require you to undergo more surgery.

As with any plastic surgery procedure, only deal with board-certified plastic surgeons that have the requisite training and experience to safely work on your nose.

‘Botox Bandit’ Receives Sentence, No Felony Conviction

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

Maria Chrysson, the 29-year old ‘Botox Bandit’ who failed to pay for over $5000 Botox treatments at two Miami-Dade clinics, was sentenced to two years probation and 100 hours of community service in a Miami court yesterday. Because of a plea deal, Chrysson will not have a felony conviction on her record.

After the “no contest” plea deal went through, the ankle bracelet she had been wearing since her arrest came off. She also has been under house arrest but the terms of the deal remove that restriction as well.

“Well, I’m just glad that I’m off my house arrest, and I can move on with my life,” said Chrysson.

Including the two dermatologists in Miami-Dade who accuse Chrysson of stealing a combined $5000 in Botox treatments, the ‘Botox Bandit’ will also need to answer to similar charges in Broward County. There, she’s accused of skipping out on around $3300 worth of similar treatments.

Chrysson has in fact paid back about $5000 in restitution to the clinics according to her attorney Daniel Lurvey, who says this is one of the most unique cases he’s ever worked (and certainly one of the more unique stories we’ve looked in to as well).

The whole situation is unique with arresting officers saying Chrysson asked if she could log-in to her Facebook profile and see if anyone knew she had been arrested. Officers also say she was disappointed that no TV cameras were present to document her arrest. They were on hand however for her court appearance yesterday.

If Chrysson stays out of trouble, her probation could be ended after one year.

Her attorney also says the “Botox Bandit” has received several offers from reality shows but says she has turned those down so she can focus on getting her life back together.

Dermal Fillers Useful in Rejuvenating the Eye Region

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

Many cosmetic surgeons around the U.S. are now using dermal fillers known as Hyaluronic Acid to revitalize eyes without resorting to a more surgically intensive eye lift procedure. Through research and clinical trials, plastic surgeons believe HA fillers are a suitable alternative for improving the eye that’s long lasting.

HA fillers, similar to fat injections, are inserted in both the upper and lower eye region. Doing so adds volume and minimizes the appearance of tired, sunken eyes.

Surgeons use a local anesthetic for this procedure and it takes about an hour to complete.

Research has also showed HA fillers can last around 2 years and are completely reversible…they also only cause mild side effects such as light swelling or bruising.

Commenting on HA fillers helping patients rejuvenate their eyes, Dr. Val Lambros explains “The addition of volume may provide a better-looking result than traditional surgical procedures, and in some cases, filling in the brow expands the lid skin sufficiently to smooth wrinkles.”

Check out the video below for further explanation of this exciting procedure and how it can potentially help plastic surgery patients improve their eyes without undergoing an invasive surgical procedure.

ASPS and other Medical Organizations Offer 8 Lawnmower Safety Tips

Thursday, July 8th, 2010

Now that summer is in full swing, we’re all watching our lawns blossom and keeping a regular schedule for trimming them. Since kids are out of school, it’s a natural chore for them to keep them busy.

In 2009, approximately 247,000 people were treated for lawnmower accidents…18,000 of these incidents involved children under the age of 19 according the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Since 2008, lawnmower related injuries have increased by 7%.

Since the summer mowing season is upon us, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, American Society for Reconstructive Microsurgery, American Society of Maxillofacial Surgeons, American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons are teaming together to educate homeowners, especially those with kids, the importance of lawnmower safety.

Many lawnmower injuries require specialists from several areas including plastic surgery, microsurgery, pediatrics and orthopaedics to name a few.

“Lawn mower injuries often include deep cuts, loss of fingers and toes, limb amputations, broken and dislocated bones, burns, and eye injuries,” said ASPS President Michael McGuire, MD. “Most are caused by careless use and can be prevented by following a few simple safety tips.”

Continue reading for 8 tips on preventing lawnmower injuries at your home this summer.

  1. Only let kids 12 and older operate a push mower – 16 and up for a riding mower
  2. Never have children ride as passengers on a riding mower
  3. Wear sturdy shoes when mowing, not sandals
  4. Keep young children away from the area you’re mowing
  5. To prevent injuries from flying objects, pick up stones, toys and any other debris before mowing
  6. Wear eye and hearing protection when mowing
  7. Only use a mower that has a control that stops it from moving forward if the handle is released
  8. Only pull backward or mow in reverse if it’s absolutely necessary and make sure no one is behind you if you must do it

Following these tips when mowing your lawn will ensure your summer will be safe, happy and healthy. While helping accident victims regain their natural looks after an accident is very rewarding work in one respect, we’d rather not have to do it in the first place, saving people from the trauma and hassle of undergoing several surgeries.

Jerusalem University Manufactures Collagen from Genetically Modified Tobacco Plants

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

Researchers at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel have successfully produced a replica of human collagen from genetically modified tobacco plants, potentially having tremendous commercial implications for use in various medical procedures.

Collagen is the most prevalent protein in the human body and provides texture, resiliency and shape in human’s skin. It is found throughout the body in skin, muscle, tendons and bones. Collagen fibers weave together like threads in fabrics to form a framework where new cells can grow.

Today, collagen is commercially produced from cows, pigs and even human cadavers (but poses different health and ethical issues). It is used in a variety of surgical implants and wound healing devices. The commercial collagen market in the U.S. currently exceeds $30 billion annually.

Creating human recombinant type I pro-collagen requires the coordinated expression of five different genes. Dr. Oded Shoseyov of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem has the only laboratory in the world that has been successful at this co-expression. His findings have been patented and the scientific findings behind it were recently published in the Biomacromolecules journal.

The new collagen has also seen a lot interest among investors and commercial producers – already raising $15 million to bring it to market.

This discovery could potentially revolutionize various aesthetic treatments we offer at our Gainesville plastic surgery clinic. Dermal fillers like these are a great way to smooth out wrinkles and lines on your face that appear over time. Weather, time, gravity and other factors cause your face to lose its fullness as you age.

Synthetic collagens like Cosmoplast, Cosmoderm, Artefil and this newest discovery help restore your youthful look with minimal invasiveness.

“Real Housewives” Reality Show Knows What Questions to Ask when Looking for a Plastic Surgeon

Wednesday, June 9th, 2010

When it comes to choosing a qualified plastic surgeon, Bravo’s hit TV series “Real Housewives of New York City” knows the proper questions a prospective patient should ask…we applaud one of the housewives, Ramona Singer, for emphasizing in a recent episode the importance of choosing a board certified plastic surgeon that has appropriate hospital privileges.

In the episode entitled “Stay on Message,” one of the housewives (Sonja Morgan) takes her friend (Ramona Singer) to her plastic surgery consultation to help her ask the right questions to the surgeon about her liposuction procedure.

During the consultation, Ramona asks the surgeon if he had operating privileges at a hospital, what year was he board certified and was he a member of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS).

In a press release, the ASAPS applauds these questions featured in the show and urge anyone interested in plastic surgery to ask these questions when they meet with a prospective surgeon.

Here are just a few of the items ASAPS suggest you ask a prospective plastic surgeon about. Doing so will ensure you are working with an experienced surgeon who will be able to complete your procedure safely.

Check Board-Certification

Independently verify whether the surgeon is certified with the American Board of Plastic Surgery. This will provide a good indication of his or her training in a particular medical or surgical specialty.

Check ASAPS Membership

Being a member of the ASAPS indicates the surgeon is well qualified and has significant experience in the fields of plastic and cosmetic surgery…ASAPS membership is by invitation only.

Check Facility Accreditation

Cosmetic surgery procedures can be safely performed in a hospital, surgicenter or an office-based surgical facility. Most office based facilities are not accredited but do have safety records comparable to a hospital. Another advantage of ASAPS members…they only perform procedures in an accredited hospital, state licensed or Medicare certified facility.

Check Reliable Sources

When investigating a surgeon, ask around your community. Your primary care doctor is a good place to start…so is family and friends who may know someone who has dealt with that surgeon. Verify their board certification on your own and research procedures before going in for a consultation.

Verifying this information is critical to ensuring you are not caught using a surgeon that’s not qualified in plastic surgery and/or has substandard facilities. Plastic surgeries gone wrong can be both financially and mentally devastating.

Like Ramona, protect yourself and/or a loved one when looking for plastic surgery services.

“Gummy Bear” Breast Implants Offer Alternative to Saline and Silicone

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

While breast implants have been available for years now, researchers in academia and industry are always on the lookout for better materials to make implants safer and more comfortable. Cohesive silicone gel implants are one of the newest types of breast implants to hit the market.

Due to the similarities with the texture of gummy bear candy, these implants are informally known as “gummy bear” breast implants. While their use hasn’t been approved in the U.S. yet, they are taking Europe and Brazil by storm…and there’s good reason why.

First, they use a new type of silicone that addresses two of the problems with traditional saline and silicone implants – rupturing and rippling. If there’s a tear in one the new gummy bear implants, the substance inside will maintain its shape and integrity, alleviating the concern of silicone migrating to other parts of the body where it can cause problems.

Cohesive silicone gel implants also have a more natural feel than traditional saline implants. Other advantages of gummy bear implants include:

  • Lower risk of rupture and leaking
  • More natural look and comfortable fit
  • Ability to maintain their form, or “bounce back”
  • Less risk of capsular contracture, or inflammation and hardening of scar tissue

While it may seem gummy bear implants are infallible, they do have some disadvantages over more traditional options. One, they feel firmer than other implant options, which may be uncomfortable for some women. Also, a larger incision is required to insert them and they do cost more. And if the implant does move, it may cause a distorted appearance.

Unfortunately, this procedure is not available on a wide scale in the U.S. To obtain gummy bear implants in this country, women have to enroll in a clinical study that’s evaluating these implants (or travel to Europe or Brazil)

Even though there are some drawbacks, reports from patients indicate overwhelming satisfaction. In fact, they have become one the most popular breast augmentation options in Europe and Brazil.

In the mean time, consider breast augmentation and lift options at our Florida plastic surgery center in Gainesville. If you’re interested in learning more, contact Accent Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics today.

Liposuction Causes Natural Breast Enhancement Study Concludes

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

An interesting study published in September 2007’s issue of Dermatologic Surgery shows women who have fat removed from other parts of the body through liposuction can experience an increase in one to two cup sizes.

Board certified surgeon Dr. Eric Finzi conducted the study after many of his tumescent liposuction patients returned for post-operative check-ups with the unexpected side effect of larger breasts. Finzi’s study of the matter concluded that 43% of female patients who undergo one or more liposuction procedures experience an increase in their breast size…heavier patients who had more fat removed were more likely to experience a natural breast enhancement.

“This is the first step in the development of natural breast enlargement,” stated Dr. Finzi, who has performed thousands of liposuction procedures in parts of the body that good dieting and exercise couldn’t touch.

Liposuction has become a popular cosmetic procedure since its inception in 1987. Besides the conventional benefits of safety and removal of unwanted fat without surgical scarring, women may also benefit from a natural increase in their breast size.

Up until these findings, breast implants were the only known way for women to increase the size of their breasts. Over 2 million women in the U.S. have undergone implant surgery but despite its popularity, implants continue to have frequent complications including implant rupture, hardening of the breasts, changes in sensation and more.

Data from Dr. Finzi’s study suggest an added benefit of liposuction surgery – perhaps allowing you to kill two birds with one stone.

Looking to get rid of excess skin and fat that good dieting and exercise can’t deal with, perhaps getting some natural breast enhancement in the process? Contact Florida liposuction surgeons at Accent Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics today for a free consultation.

Topless Dancer Allowed to Deduct Breast Implants

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

Internal Revenue Service code stipulates that business expenses can be deducted provided they are “ordinary and necessary.” U.S. tax laws generally categorize what you spend to improve your appearance, general health or sense of well-being as personal expenses that are nondeductible.

But an exotic dancer going by the name of “Chesty Love” found a way around this. Cynthia Hess, an Indiana exotic dancer, convinced a tax court to uphold a deduction for her new breast implants. Because of a hereditary deficiency, Chesty Love had to settle for less earnings until her agent convinced her to increase her bust size first to a 56FF and then to 56N!

With her new bust and stage name, Chesty Love began seeing more earnings from her exotic dancing career. Deducting the expense of a breast enlargement from her tax return was lost on IRS bureaucrats however.

Special trial judge Joan Seitz Pate reasoned that for someone like Cynthia, top-heavy breasts are a business asset and the silicone implants are “stage props” and therefore can be deducted as a business expense on her taxes.

To back her decision, the judge equated the implants to work uniforms and clothing – commonly accepted expenses workers can deduct on their taxes. These deductions must satisfy two conditions: (1) required as a condition of employment and (2) unsuitable for everyday use.

Mrs. Hess didn’t have any trouble proving the first condition saying her breasts are a “costume” she requires to maintain her employment. As for the second stipulation, the court cited Cynthia’s testimony that says she would remove the implants each day if that were possible. Hess maintains that she will have the implants removed once her dancing career is over.

Cynthia also testified that she and her husband regularly endure off-color jokes and condescending comments from people they encounter regarding her, to say the least, exceptionally large bust size.
