New “Gummy Bear” Implants Signal Potential Revolution in Breast Reconstruction Technology

November 3rd, 2010

Although they’re still in clinical trials, new “gummy bear” implants could provide women with more breast reconstruction options.

Standard breast implants – while quite adequate for many – only address diameter and volume.

“Gummy Bear” implants, which are technically known as ‘form stable’ implants, provide more dimensional options that can be customized to each individual’s need more easily. These novel implants address width, height and projection and appeal to women who are looking for a more authentic look.

Form stable implants like the ‘gummy bear’ implant do maintain their shape while you’re lying down. Standard saline implants on the other hand flatten so that’s something to keep in mind when evaluating your options.

Also, the ‘gummy bear’ implant material consists of a much more cohesive gel, meaning that if there’s a tear, the greater the likelihood the material will stay together.

Learn more about this new and exciting breast reconstruction option in this Plastic Surgery Channel interview. Dr. Scott Spier, chief of plastic surgery at Georgetown University Hospital, explains in more detail how ‘gummy bear’ implants differ from traditional breast implants.

While these interesting new implants are still in clinical trials, we’re excited about the prospect they offer and look forward to making them available to Accent patients as soon as practically possible.

Rejuvenate your Body after Pregnancy with a Mommy Makeover

October 13th, 2010

Florida cosmetic surgeons at Accent Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics understand how pregnancy can take its toll on your body and while we don’t want to underestimate this joyous occasion in your life, we also must come to terms with the effects it can have on us physically.

To deal with these issues, a good diet and exercise routine is important. But while those good acts can be a big help, they sometimes can’t quite get rid of the effects pregnancy and breast feeding can leave behind.

A mommy makeover at our Florida clinic can help address areas in your stomach, breasts and thighs that may be permanently altered due to pregnancy.

Stretched stomach muscles, sagging breasts and loose, sagging skin are the main physical consequences of having children. Florida mommy makeover surgeons at Accent Plastics employ a wide-range of procedures and techniques to help address these areas.

In fact, a mommy makeover generally consists of at least one of the following three plastic surgery procedures:

1.       Tummy tuck (abdominoplasty)

2.       Breast Augmentation/Breast Lift

3.       Liposuction

Continue reading about mommy makeovers in our Florida cosmetic surgery knowledge centers to see if these procedures can help you regain your pre-pregnancy body. Remember, it’s about restoring your appearance and not designed to serve as a solution to any other issues. Good dieting and exercise are critical to maintaining the benefits of undergoing a mommy makeover.

Improve your Nose’s Proportion and Appearance with a Rhinoplasty

October 6th, 2010

Florida nose surgeons at Accent Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics expertly help men & women correct irregularities in their nose to improve proportion and even improve breathing.

If your nose is out of proportion with the rest of your face or structural problems are causing you to difficulty breathing, nose surgery at our Florida clinic can help correct your problems.

Nose shape is largely determined by familial traits but accidents or a prior surgery can dramatically alter its appearance. A rhinoplasty can change the nose’s size in relation to other facial features, change the width of the nose at the bridge and/or get rid of visible bumps and depressions on the bridge.

Nose surgery also corrects large or drooping nasal tips, nostrils that are too large, small or upturned and enhances nasal asymmetry and deviation.

Generally speaking, patients who are in good health and have realistic expectations are great candidates for nose surgery…it’s a very individualized procedure and it only can be done for you, not to satisfy others’ wishes.

If you think a rhinoplasty may be what’s needed to address your problems and accomplish your goals, you will first need to meet with a board-certified Florida nose surgeon to discuss your areas of concern, general health and your goals and expectations. During this interview, surgeons will want to snap a few pictures, measure your face and discuss surgical options.

Be completely honest with them during this session…doing so makes the procedure go along quicker with less chance of error.

From here, you can go ahead and schedule your nose surgery procedure. It’s an outpatient procedure so you will need to have a friend or family member come with you to the clinic to drive you home.

Recovery from the procedure itself takes a day or two but you should plan to have at least a week of reduced activity. As your new nasal contours form, you may feel a little soreness and see a little swelling for possibly up to a year. Once the recovery is complete though, you’re sure to love your new look…take a look at some of our rhinoplasty before & after photos to get an idea.

If you’re looking for options to address areas of concern in your nose or in other areas, learn more about nose surgery at our clinic or contact Florida nose surgeons at Accent Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics today to schedule an appointment.

‘Botox Bandit’ Receives Sentence, No Felony Conviction

September 23rd, 2010

Maria Chrysson, the 29-year old ‘Botox Bandit’ who failed to pay for over $5000 Botox treatments at two Miami-Dade clinics, was sentenced to two years probation and 100 hours of community service in a Miami court yesterday. Because of a plea deal, Chrysson will not have a felony conviction on her record.

After the “no contest” plea deal went through, the ankle bracelet she had been wearing since her arrest came off. She also has been under house arrest but the terms of the deal remove that restriction as well.

“Well, I’m just glad that I’m off my house arrest, and I can move on with my life,” said Chrysson.

Including the two dermatologists in Miami-Dade who accuse Chrysson of stealing a combined $5000 in Botox treatments, the ‘Botox Bandit’ will also need to answer to similar charges in Broward County. There, she’s accused of skipping out on around $3300 worth of similar treatments.

Chrysson has in fact paid back about $5000 in restitution to the clinics according to her attorney Daniel Lurvey, who says this is one of the most unique cases he’s ever worked (and certainly one of the more unique stories we’ve looked in to as well).

The whole situation is unique with arresting officers saying Chrysson asked if she could log-in to her Facebook profile and see if anyone knew she had been arrested. Officers also say she was disappointed that no TV cameras were present to document her arrest. They were on hand however for her court appearance yesterday.

If Chrysson stays out of trouble, her probation could be ended after one year.

Her attorney also says the “Botox Bandit” has received several offers from reality shows but says she has turned those down so she can focus on getting her life back together.

New I-Phone App Lets you See How you Would Look after a Facial Plastic Surgery Procedure

September 15th, 2010

If you’ve ever wondered what you would look like with a bigger nose, smaller chin or breast implants, a new I-Phone app now lets you see.

Created by a south Florida plastic surgeon Dr. Michael Salzhauer, this popular “iSurgeon” app is taking the world by storm. Anyone will now be able to see what they would look like after a particular cosmetic surgery procedure – all accompanied by very distinct sawing, screaming and grinding noises.

“They could do this in the privacy of their home, and if they were ready to take the next step, they could e-mail it to a plastic surgeon or make an appointment and have a realistic discussion about what’s possible and what isn’t,” Salzhauer told CBS News 4 in Miami.

Even if you don’t have an I-Phone, you can go online and test out a version of the iSurgeon app MTV is featuring on its website. The app allows you to “Heidi yourself,” referring to Heidi Montag who has admittedly had 10 plastic surgeries in one day.

Dr. Salzhauer doesn’t suggest going that far but says he believes plastic surgery is valuable, as long as it’s done within reason and through a board-certified plastic surgeon.

“It’s no different than getting braces to straighten your teeth or changing the color of your hair,” says the good doctor.

And while new technology is good, clinical psychologist Dr. Maria Rodriguez at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York says it’s important one doesn’t obsess over their body and that they should question any motivations they have for wanting to undergo a plastic surgery procedure…she also says if you want to “Heidi yourself” then you probably need to seek some counseling.

In the end though, Dr. Rodriguez says this app is for fun and designed to satisfy one’s curiosity on what they would look like after undergoing a plastic surgery procedure.

I-Phone users can easily download the app for their phones by searching for “iSurgeon” in the App store.

Take a look at the video below for a demonstration on how the iSurgeon app works.

New & Improved Liposuction Techniques Reduce Risk of Complication Study Says

September 8th, 2010

Like other medical and cosmetic surgery procedures, liposuction has come a long way. Developments in techniques have allowed doctors to remove excess fat more efficiently and safely shape the body through fat removal.

Now, a new study in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal examines what works and what doesn’t.

Over the last three decades or so, technologies and tools used in liposuctions have drastically improved. To see what’s improved and what still needs improving, an analysis of 26,000 liposuction procedures over a period of 25 years was conducted by a team of four plastic surgeons in Cali, Colombia.

These surgeons found that tumescent liposuction and laser-assisted liposuction (LAL) techniques have drastically improved the safety of undergoing a liposuction, mainly by reducing the risk of anemia, while still providing the best aesthetic results.

As with any cosmetic surgery procedure, there are still some risks. Tumescent liposuctions for example have been shown to increase post- operative seromas – a mass or swelling caused by the localized accumulation of serum (a yellowish fluid) within a tissue or organ.

The surgeons’ survey and study found that while 90% of patients reported post-operative pain, 82% of them were generally satisfied with the results of their procedure…results were similar for the other liposuction procedures covered in the review.

As always, discuss all options with a board-certified cosmetic surgeon before making any decisions. While safety has improved dramatically, there is still some risk of complication but with the right planning and information, you can be assured it’s safe to undergo a liposuction.

‘Botox Bandit’ Arrested for “Stealing” Aesthetic Services in Florida

August 26th, 2010

Police in Miami Beach recently nabbed Maria Elizabeth Chrysson, also known locally as the “Botox Bandit,” for not paying for over $4000 worth of liposuction treatments at a south Florida plastic surgery center.

According to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, Chrysson was writing bad checks to cover for the treatments and even walking out of the office without paying on a couple of occasions. She was arrested at a Latin café in Miami Beach…complaining about a “bad hair day,” Chrysson was especially worried about how her mug shot would appear.

Chrysson’s lawyer, Daniel Lurvey, says “We were in the process of making restitution when the arrest occurred. We will continue to attempt to resolve the matter of the alleged victim.”

The infamous “Botox Bandit” has been charged three counts of grand theft and one count of scheming to defraud.

In addition to the arrest, Chrysson is also being investigated for a similar situation at a plastic surgery center in Ft. Lauderdale where it’s alleged she walked out and neglected to pay a $3300 bill for 50 Botox injections.

A Miami-Dade judge has ordered Chrysson to remain under house arrest and wear and ankle monitor until her trial.

The “Botox Bandit” was notoriously more concerned with appearances than with the seriousness of the charges according to officers. She inquired several times about logging into her Facebook page to see if anyone knew she had been arrested.

Of course, we do like to help women like Chrysson look and feel their best but please, we do prefer customers who pay their bill and are upfront with us. We hope Ms. Chrysson can seek help for her troubles and the legal system is able to obtain compensation for our colleagues’ services.

Correct Changes in your Breast Implants with a Breast Revision

August 19th, 2010

One way Florida plastic surgeons at Gainesville’s Accent Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics expertly help women accomplish their goals of fuller breasts are to use implants. However, changes with the implants themselves or natural changes in the breast tissue after child-birth or weight loss can cause the breasts to lose their fullness.

Besides these changes in breast tissue, some women simply desire larger or smaller breasts and will require a breast revision to help them accomplish their goals.

Breast revision is in fact one of or a combination of other common cosmetic breast procedures we perform at our Gainesville clinic…perhaps it’s a breast lift after giving birth, or even a breast reduction in some cases.

Either way, everyone’s situation is unique so learn more about the procedure and if it’s the right course of action to help you accomplish your goals by reading our newest page on breast revisions or contact Florida breast revision surgeons at Accent Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics today.

Correcting Abnormal Breast Development in Young Women

August 3rd, 2010

Abnormal breast development – known in the plastic surgery world as a congenital breast asymmetry – is an unfortunate reality for many young women. Most women do have slight differences in each of their breasts but these are unnoticeable in most cases.

However, some women have extreme differences in their breasts, which are caused by genetic tendencies or simply differences in the way paired organs like breasts grow.

Whatever the reason, breast asymmetry is a difficult situation for anyone to be in, destroying confidence and optimism.

Fortunately, Florida plastic surgeons at Accent Plastics have the ability to correct these differences.

Breast buds begin developing in young girls anywhere between the ages of 7 and 13 or whenever a girl’s biological clock makes her body create more estrogen. About two years after this event, the first menstrual period occurs while breasts continue developing for another 2-4 years, which is where noticeable differences in the breast size can occur.

By age 21 though, breasts are fully developed so if you still have noticeable differences at this point, a congenital breast asymmetry may be right for you. The only other events where breasts will change are pregnancy and menopause.

But what does a congenital breast asymmetry involve?

Well, it’s actually other common plastic surgery procedures except it’s done for a different purpose.

Since it’s a very personal thing, you cannot know what your breasts require without speaking with a qualified breast asymmetry surgeon.

To correct differences in the size of your breasts, surgeons can employ a breast augmentation, breast lift, breast reduction or a combination of these procedures.

Therefore, recovering from this procedure is exactly like other cosmetic breast procedures we offer at our Gainesville clinic.

Take a moment and see if a congenital breast asymmetry is right for you and what you can expect if you decide to go forward with the procedure.

And if you have any questions or want to schedule an appointment, contact Florida breast asymmetry surgeons at Accent Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics.
