Tax Refunds Provide Some Boon to Plastic Surgery Industry

Wednesday, May 11th, 2011

Looks like folks are putting their tax returns to good use. The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) recently reported on an interesting phenomenon this year: people are using their income tax returns to help pay for plastic surgery procedures.

Some might think the procedures that we perform are unattainable except by those in the highest income bracket, but this is a misconception. The cosmetic surgery field offers so many numerous treatments, and we see patients from just about every income level.

One of the greatest things about plastic surgery to me is the sheer variety of services we can offer to our patients. Our field is heavily involved in research, so new procedures are constantly being developed, while existing methods get honed and improved. The result of this is that we can serve a wider variety of patients.

A woman quoted in the ASAPS article discusses her intention to get a breast lift. She relates that she knew she wanted the procedure after the birth of her youngest child. This isn’t a Hollywood actress getting a facelift or Botox treatments to boost her career. This is a mom looking to do something for herself in the midst of packing lunches and giving her kids rides to soccer practice.

That’s what’s so great about the plastic surgery industry today. There isn’t just one market for our services. One patient might walk into the office looking for breast implants and a butt lift to turn heads on the Florida beach, while the next patient we see could be interested in otoplasty to correct his protruding ears, build confidence and improve his career prospects.

The habit of using an income tax return for an elective or luxury purchase is a fairly long-standing tradition for a large part of the American population, but a down economy changes that. Instead, when budgets are tight, many families have to use their tax refunds for practical things like mortgage and car payments.

Seeing that people are choosing to spend that windfall on cosmetic surgery this year signifies that the economy is finally, truly bouncing back, since folks again have the option of using their tax returns for things that aren’t dire needs. We can also assume from this is that patients are looking to cosmetic surgery for the same reasons they always did, including improved self-confidence and better career prospects.

All in all, I’d say this is definitely good news for the economy.

Brazilian Surgeon Says He Operated on Gaddafi

Monday, May 2nd, 2011

Well this is certainly not how you expect to hear about plastic surgery in the news. A surgeon from Brazil is claiming that in 1995 he secretly performed a late night cosmetic procedure on Libyan leader Moammar Gaddafi.

Whether you buy the story not, it certainly makes quite a tale. Brazilian surgeon Dr. Liacyr Ribeiro tells of being spirited into a bunker in the dead of night, where Gaddafi explained that he needed his people to see him as a young and strong, and requested cosmetic surgery. The leader agreed to hair plugs and, after refusing a facelift, also agreed to a Facial Fat Transfer. For this procedure, Dr. Ribeiro removed fat from the stomach and injected it into the face to plump up the skin and hide the appearance of wrinkles.

What’s fascinating here is the whole cloak and dagger feel of his story. The events happened late at night, and one can assume that part of the reason for Gaddafi’s refusal of the facelift was that he did not want to have to explain scars or stay in hiding while he healed. It was clearly important to the leader that his people see him as strong, but he also seemed quite determined to give the impression that his vitality was 100 percent natural and not the result of plastic surgery.

Of course, even with all the secrecy it doesn’t sound like the working conditions were unmanageable. The word bunker may call up images of tiny, dark underground spaces, but according to Dr. Ribeiro this facility had, “two fully equipped and very modern operating rooms.” He also reports told the interviewer that although Gaddafi wanted the procedures take place immediately, he did wait and allow his doctor to assemble a proper cosmetic surgery team.

Dr. Ribeiro really has no reason to make this up. As he explained to the interviewer, with the way Gaddafi looks now there’s not much for a plastic surgeon take pride in. The treatments administered during a late-night bunker visit have clearly worn off. The interview does say that the Libyan leader contacted Dr. Ribeiro around five years ago, but the doctor was unable to make the trip to Libya at the time.

Judging by Gaddafi’s current appearance, it seems he may not have been able to find another doctor to perform his cosmetic surgery after making that call. In recent photos his face shows all the signs of aging less than gracefully. The wrinkles around his eyes and on his forehead are very pronounced, and the sagging skin around his cheeks and jaw line can best be described the way Dr. Ribeiro did in the interview: jowly.

We see patients with Gaddafi’s same motivation in the plastic surgery field all the time. People turning to cosmetic treatments to help their careers certainly isn’t anything new. That said, the career in question is usually not, “leader of a foreign country.”

Can Botox Ease Painful Spinal Headaches?

Tuesday, April 26th, 2011

A recent case study from the Mayo clinic is reporting some interesting findings about Botox and its uses outside of cosmetic surgery applications. The results give hope to sufferers of Low CSF Pressure Headaches, a condition caused when a leak in the fluid around the brain creates pressure on the spinal nerves and produces painful, sometimes debilitating headaches.

Researchers presented their findings at a March 13 meeting of the American Academy of Neurology that took place in Hawaii. The patient involved in the case study was a 25-year sufferer of Low CSF Pressure Headaches. The condition had created a negative impact in this woman’s life. She often found her routine disrupted as a result of the intense pain these headaches can cause.

Doctors Paul Mathew, M.D. and Michael Cutrer, M.D. don’t practice cosmetic surgery by trade. They are neurologists who first met the patient five years ago, and have been treating her headaches with Botox for the past three. While they aren’t touting Botox as a cure for these headaches, their case study does prove that it is an effective treatment. The patient followed in the study consistently reported that each injection relieved her symptoms for a three-month period.

This isn’t the first time Botox has shown useful outside of the plastic surgery realm. It was approved by the FDA in 2010 for treatment of migraines. As was discovered in the Low CSF Pressure Headache case study, Botox doesn’t present a permanent cure here, either. Migraine sufferers maintain their headache-free status with periodic injections in the side of their head, their brow and forehead.

Previously the only treatment for Low CSF Pressure Headaches involved injecting a small amount of the patient’s blood around the area of the leaking spinal fluid, but it was the migraine connection that inspired doctors Mathew and Cutrer to try Botox in this case, after more traditional treatments failed to relieve the patient’s pain.

This is pretty exciting news in the plastic surgery field. As medical science expands the applications of Botox, we continue to find new ways to serve our patients. Of course our wish would be to eliminate these painful headaches altogether, but the existence of a treatment is definitely a step in the right direction.

Despite Highly Publicized Deaths, Plastic Surgery Complications Rare

Tuesday, December 14th, 2010

While we all take safety precautions in performing various plastic surgery procedures at our clinic, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) reminds people that any surgical procedure carries inherent risk.

They recommend 6 important recommendations when considering plastic surgery, including:

1. Research benefits and risks of any procedure as much as you can before going forward. Check out our resources on plastic surgery or visit the ASPS website for more.

2. Have realistic expectations and fully discuss risks and recovery time with your surgeon beforehand.

3. Talk to other patients who have undergone the procedure to learn of their experiences.

4. Discuss your full medical history with your surgeon before undergoing any procedure.

5. Only choose surgeons accredited by the ASPS. They have a certain level of experience, professionalism and have all proper certifications.

6. If your surgery is taking place at an outpatient center, verify the center’s accreditation

“The death of a patient is always tragic and devastating for all involved, particularly the patient’s family and the medical team,” said Richard D’Amico, MD, ASPS president. “However, we don’t want to unnecessarily frighten the public. While this situation is rare, the decision to have a plastic surgery procedure is serious. No-risk surgery doesn’t exist.”

Plastic surgery procedures are relatively safe, with serious complications only occurring in 1 in 298 or 0.34 percent. Death occurs in 1 in 51,459, or 0.0019 percent of cases according to a 2004 study from the ASPS that evaluated over 400,000 surgeries.

Any death or complication is tragic but these statistics show that despite any of these highly publicized things, death and complications from plastic surgery are very rare.

New “Gummy Bear” Implants Signal Potential Revolution in Breast Reconstruction Technology

Wednesday, November 3rd, 2010

Although they’re still in clinical trials, new “gummy bear” implants could provide women with more breast reconstruction options.

Standard breast implants – while quite adequate for many – only address diameter and volume.

“Gummy Bear” implants, which are technically known as ‘form stable’ implants, provide more dimensional options that can be customized to each individual’s need more easily. These novel implants address width, height and projection and appeal to women who are looking for a more authentic look.

Form stable implants like the ‘gummy bear’ implant do maintain their shape while you’re lying down. Standard saline implants on the other hand flatten so that’s something to keep in mind when evaluating your options.

Also, the ‘gummy bear’ implant material consists of a much more cohesive gel, meaning that if there’s a tear, the greater the likelihood the material will stay together.

Learn more about this new and exciting breast reconstruction option in this Plastic Surgery Channel interview. Dr. Scott Spier, chief of plastic surgery at Georgetown University Hospital, explains in more detail how ‘gummy bear’ implants differ from traditional breast implants.

While these interesting new implants are still in clinical trials, we’re excited about the prospect they offer and look forward to making them available to Accent patients as soon as practically possible.

Rejuvenate your Body after Pregnancy with a Mommy Makeover

Wednesday, October 13th, 2010

Florida cosmetic surgeons at Accent Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics understand how pregnancy can take its toll on your body and while we don’t want to underestimate this joyous occasion in your life, we also must come to terms with the effects it can have on us physically.

To deal with these issues, a good diet and exercise routine is important. But while those good acts can be a big help, they sometimes can’t quite get rid of the effects pregnancy and breast feeding can leave behind.

A mommy makeover at our Florida clinic can help address areas in your stomach, breasts and thighs that may be permanently altered due to pregnancy.

Stretched stomach muscles, sagging breasts and loose, sagging skin are the main physical consequences of having children. Florida mommy makeover surgeons at Accent Plastics employ a wide-range of procedures and techniques to help address these areas.

In fact, a mommy makeover generally consists of at least one of the following three plastic surgery procedures:

1.       Tummy tuck (abdominoplasty)

2.       Breast Augmentation/Breast Lift

3.       Liposuction

Continue reading about mommy makeovers in our Florida cosmetic surgery knowledge centers to see if these procedures can help you regain your pre-pregnancy body. Remember, it’s about restoring your appearance and not designed to serve as a solution to any other issues. Good dieting and exercise are critical to maintaining the benefits of undergoing a mommy makeover.

‘Botox Bandit’ Receives Sentence, No Felony Conviction

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

Maria Chrysson, the 29-year old ‘Botox Bandit’ who failed to pay for over $5000 Botox treatments at two Miami-Dade clinics, was sentenced to two years probation and 100 hours of community service in a Miami court yesterday. Because of a plea deal, Chrysson will not have a felony conviction on her record.

After the “no contest” plea deal went through, the ankle bracelet she had been wearing since her arrest came off. She also has been under house arrest but the terms of the deal remove that restriction as well.

“Well, I’m just glad that I’m off my house arrest, and I can move on with my life,” said Chrysson.

Including the two dermatologists in Miami-Dade who accuse Chrysson of stealing a combined $5000 in Botox treatments, the ‘Botox Bandit’ will also need to answer to similar charges in Broward County. There, she’s accused of skipping out on around $3300 worth of similar treatments.

Chrysson has in fact paid back about $5000 in restitution to the clinics according to her attorney Daniel Lurvey, who says this is one of the most unique cases he’s ever worked (and certainly one of the more unique stories we’ve looked in to as well).

The whole situation is unique with arresting officers saying Chrysson asked if she could log-in to her Facebook profile and see if anyone knew she had been arrested. Officers also say she was disappointed that no TV cameras were present to document her arrest. They were on hand however for her court appearance yesterday.

If Chrysson stays out of trouble, her probation could be ended after one year.

Her attorney also says the “Botox Bandit” has received several offers from reality shows but says she has turned those down so she can focus on getting her life back together.

New I-Phone App Lets you See How you Would Look after a Facial Plastic Surgery Procedure

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

If you’ve ever wondered what you would look like with a bigger nose, smaller chin or breast implants, a new I-Phone app now lets you see.

Created by a south Florida plastic surgeon Dr. Michael Salzhauer, this popular “iSurgeon” app is taking the world by storm. Anyone will now be able to see what they would look like after a particular cosmetic surgery procedure – all accompanied by very distinct sawing, screaming and grinding noises.

“They could do this in the privacy of their home, and if they were ready to take the next step, they could e-mail it to a plastic surgeon or make an appointment and have a realistic discussion about what’s possible and what isn’t,” Salzhauer told CBS News 4 in Miami.

Even if you don’t have an I-Phone, you can go online and test out a version of the iSurgeon app MTV is featuring on its website. The app allows you to “Heidi yourself,” referring to Heidi Montag who has admittedly had 10 plastic surgeries in one day.

Dr. Salzhauer doesn’t suggest going that far but says he believes plastic surgery is valuable, as long as it’s done within reason and through a board-certified plastic surgeon.

“It’s no different than getting braces to straighten your teeth or changing the color of your hair,” says the good doctor.

And while new technology is good, clinical psychologist Dr. Maria Rodriguez at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York says it’s important one doesn’t obsess over their body and that they should question any motivations they have for wanting to undergo a plastic surgery procedure…she also says if you want to “Heidi yourself” then you probably need to seek some counseling.

In the end though, Dr. Rodriguez says this app is for fun and designed to satisfy one’s curiosity on what they would look like after undergoing a plastic surgery procedure.

I-Phone users can easily download the app for their phones by searching for “iSurgeon” in the App store.

Take a look at the video below for a demonstration on how the iSurgeon app works.

New & Improved Liposuction Techniques Reduce Risk of Complication Study Says

Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

Like other medical and cosmetic surgery procedures, liposuction has come a long way. Developments in techniques have allowed doctors to remove excess fat more efficiently and safely shape the body through fat removal.

Now, a new study in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal examines what works and what doesn’t.

Over the last three decades or so, technologies and tools used in liposuctions have drastically improved. To see what’s improved and what still needs improving, an analysis of 26,000 liposuction procedures over a period of 25 years was conducted by a team of four plastic surgeons in Cali, Colombia.

These surgeons found that tumescent liposuction and laser-assisted liposuction (LAL) techniques have drastically improved the safety of undergoing a liposuction, mainly by reducing the risk of anemia, while still providing the best aesthetic results.

As with any cosmetic surgery procedure, there are still some risks. Tumescent liposuctions for example have been shown to increase post- operative seromas – a mass or swelling caused by the localized accumulation of serum (a yellowish fluid) within a tissue or organ.

The surgeons’ survey and study found that while 90% of patients reported post-operative pain, 82% of them were generally satisfied with the results of their procedure…results were similar for the other liposuction procedures covered in the review.

As always, discuss all options with a board-certified cosmetic surgeon before making any decisions. While safety has improved dramatically, there is still some risk of complication but with the right planning and information, you can be assured it’s safe to undergo a liposuction.
